What is Delftware?

Do you remember those blue and white milk jugs and kitchen tiles with the little girl and boy poised for a kiss, these porcelain pieces are iconic symbols of the Netherlands. Potters from this part of the world have made beautifully decorated, blue-tinged earthenware, called Delftware, since the 17th century. This type of ceramics is highly valued because of its historical significance and association with traditional Dutch design.

The style of pottery is also sought after by most visitors to the Netherlands and can be spotted at specialist stores throughout Amsterdam. These would be the perfect souvenirs to bring a piece of the Netherlands to your home!

Will you be in Amsterdam to pick up some of these treasures? Amsterdam is typically the start (or end) point of most Rhine River cruises, including our Hosted Sailing on the Rhine. If you’re traveling in early Spring on a Tulip Time sailing through Dutch and Holland Waterways, Amsterdam will usually serve as your start and end point.

If you have questions about River Cruising, I would love to connect for a 30 minute no-obligation call. Schedule that right here. Until then, Cheers!
