Locks on the Rhine

I must admit, I was completely and utterly enamored with the lock system on Europe’s rivers when I first sailed. I had learned about them and their fundamental concept in elementary school but until I experienced one, I didn’t fully appreciate it.

I took this photo somewhere between Cologne and the Rhine Gorge, heading up river on a July 2021 sailing. We pulled into a massive concrete box, all the way to the wall in front, and after the water slowly rose, we drove out OVER that wall… it’s so simple yet so captivating. I went to a window each time we passed through one.

Another fun fact, almost every River Cruise ship is exactly 38ft wide and 304ft long to fit into the locks just perfectly.

Consider joining me on one of my other Hosted Sailings on the world’s great rivers and experience locks for yourself.
