The Unexpected Delight on the Danube
The Dilema
The 3rd day of our Hosted Danube Sailing is usually the most anticipated. You’ve talked about it for months, you’ve re-watched “The Sound of Music”, and you daydream over #Salzburg on Instagram. But there’s a hiccup… it’s Sunday, and with Salzburg’s deeply rooted Catholic tradition, there are few shops to peruse, few restaurants to sip and savor.
My wife and I were on the Danube, hosting our 2022 sailing, when we realized that Salzburg landed on a Sunday, creating a huge disappointment.
The Answer
There’s a lesser known included excursion on Day 3, often completely ignored because of the famed option of Salzburg, a medieval gem, called Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic. We opted for the 1.5 hour coach ride through the rolling hills of the Danube Valley arriving at the gates of this exceptionally preserved medieval city, which in our favor, was fully open for business on a Sunday afternoon. On the banks of the Vltava River in mid-June, the town was a buzz with gleeful European families enjoying summer holiday tubing and kayaking through the village center.
We toured the streets climbing to the church at the pinnacle, enjoyed beer, schnitzel, and a visit to the pastry shop before returning to the ship.
Our travels along the Danube didn’t include a planned stop in Cesky Krumlov. In the end, however, it turned out to be our favorite stop, authentically medieval Europe, and our unexpected delight on the Danube.
Cesky Krumlov falls on Day 3 of my Hosted Sailing on the Danube, departing on May 28, 2023. Consider joining me on this, or one of our other Hosted Sailings on the world’s great rivers.
